The Tank Museum will host its third wellness event on 5 October 2023, to shine…
Name this Weymouth Sea Life lockdown baby!
After a challenging start to 2021, the team at Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park welcomed the arrival of a very special ‘lockdown baby’ in their Humboldt Penguin colony.
The adorable chick hatched on 28 April to parents Yew and Juniper. The expert Animal Care Team kept a close eye on the baby and he has grown into a fine young penguin.
He’s gone from strength to strength
“The chick has gone from strength to strength and has grown to an impressive size,” said Cody Townsend, Aquarist at Weymouth SEA LIFE.
“There have been no health concerns and the parents Yew and Juniper have done a great job in rearing their baby and introducing the chick to the rest of the colony.”
The chick recently left the nest and took its first swim in the pool with the other penguins. After struggling to get out, youngster Peach showed the new chick how to get around. They have since formed a close bond.
“The chick now follows Peach around and she has taken him ‘under her wing’ like a big sister,” added Cody. “We recently confirmed the chick is a boy and so it’s definitely time he had a name.”
The team at the Weymouth Park have struggled to agree on a name for their newest addition so they are appealing for support to help them choose.
“By tradition, we name all our Humboldt Penguins after trees,” explained Cody. “We have shortlisted our favourite seven and would like our supporters to help us choose a winner, by taking part in a vote on our Facebook page.”
The team have shortlisted the following tree names to choose from:
- Salix
- Hawthorne
- Hemlock
- Groot
- Arlo
- Cypress
- Aspen
