Shire Hall brings Jason and the Argonauts to Dorchester
Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum hosts ‘Jason and the Argonauts on Tour’ in Dorchester’s Borough Gardens.
The free two-day community event on 16 and 17 August explores disability and inclusion. It features inflatable sculptures created by award-winning disabled artist Jason Wilsher-Mills as well as pop-up stalls from local disability groups and music.
Jason Wilsher-Mills works with organisations across the country using digital technology, 3D printing, as well as traditional painting to bring his art to life.
Bringing stories to life
Jason says: “I am so excited to be working with Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum once again this summer. My inflatable sculptures were inspired by my ancient Greek namesake, who sought out the bravest Greek heroes to travel with him on an epic journey. I have found new heroes in the disabled communities I’ve worked with across the UK.
“Disabled voices need to be heard. I’m proud to bring these unique stories to life through my art. I’m looking forward to sharing them with visitors at Borough Gardens this summer.”
Audience interaction
Visitors will be able to interact with Jason’s sculptures. Through an augmented reality app, visitors can discover hidden content and explore Jason’s virtual gallery.
Abbie King, Director of Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum, adds: “We’re thrilled to welcome Jason Wilsher-Mills back to Shire Hall this summer. ‘Jason and the Argonauts on Tour’ is going to be a fun, colourful event.
“There’s a powerful message of equality and inclusion at its core. Jason works with disabled people across the UK, helping them to tell their stories.”
Visitors to Borough Gardens can also enjoy music from DJ Dapper Dan. After having polio at the age of 18 months, Dan knows the effects and challenges of disability and he speaks for disabled people navigating the medical, care and benefits system.
Shire Hall will also host a work created by Wilsher-Mills from Thursday 19 August. ‘The Wackiest Race: Jason vs the System’ tells the stories of disabled people’s experiences of the benefits system.
